World's First Khadi Stamp on Mahatma Gandhi
An International Stamp Exhibition "INDIPEX 2011" held between 12th February 2011 to 18th February 2011 (one week) conducted by Indian Postal Department. India Post on the occassion of INDIPEX 2011 is bringing out a special stamp on Gandhi Ji to commemorate the event. The stamp will be unique as it will be printed on "Khadi", the handspun cotton material that Gandhi Ji held as the symbol of self determination and self reliance.
The Presentation Pack will be released by Smt. Pratibha Patil, the President of India on Saturday 12th February 2011 at INDIPEX 2011, the World Philatelic Exhibition held at New Delhi, the capital of India.
Describing Mahatma Gandhi as an apostle of peace, President Smt.Pratibha Patil on Saturday released a special khadi stamp on him. While over 100 countries have released stamps on him, this is the first time a khadi stamp has been issued in his honour. Inaugurating the week-long “INDIPEX-2011: World Philatelic Exhibition” at Pragati Maidan here, Mrs. Patil said "The hand-woven khadi material is connected with our sentiments. It occupies a special place in our country as it is linked with our freedom movement which under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi was based on the principles of truth and non-violence. He chose khadi as a symbol of unity of India against the colonial power and its use portrayed the self-reliance and dignity of the people. The fabric still remains a tool of economic freedom and a means of livelihood with dignity for many, particularly in our rural areas,” she said.
Noting that Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most visible faces in the philatelic world, the President said over a hundred countries have issued stamps on him. “This, I believe, is an acknowledgement of the universality and relevance of his message of peace and non-violence. With rising levels of strife and intolerance in the world, all endeavours should be made to spread his message far and wide.”

This Khadi Presentation pack consists 4 pages Souvenir Folder. The cost of this Presentation pack is Rs.250/- which contains a Khadi Miniature Sheet on Gandhiji with a face value of Rs.100/-.
